Luxury Vinyl Flooring Installation Process

Luxury vinyl floors are easy to install. But if you don’t have flooring experience, it’s best to leave the job to the pros. Here’s are the steps to vinyl flooring installation:

1. Install an Underlayment

Installing an underlayment provides additional cushioning, minimizes noise, and acts as a moisture barrier.

2. Prep Work

Inspect the subfloor for any damage. If it’s in good shape, clean it and ensure there isn’t any dirt, dust, or debris.

3. Acclimation

To prevent luxury vinyl plank or tile from expanding or contracting, allow it to acclimate for at least 48 hours.

4. Measure and Plan

Measure the size of your room to determine how much flooring is needed. Buy a bit extra to allow for mistakes or future repairs.

After measuring, plan how you want to install the flooring to minimize waste and achieve the perfect look. It’s best to start installing from a straight wall to the opposite side.

5.  Install the Flooring

Use a vinyl cutter to cut the planks or tiles to fit the space, and then lay the floor. Once done, install the flooring depending on its type:

  • Click-and-lock: Planks or tiles click together and rest above the subfloor. This method works in various cases, whether you want to install over cement or a floor with radiant heat.
  • Peel-and-stick: Planks or tiles come with an adhesive backing for easy installation.
  • Glue-down: Planks or tiles are glued directly to the subfloor.

Use a mallet and tapping block to ensure the seams are tight.

6. Finishing Touches and Clean-Up

Trim any excess material around the edges of the room and install baseboards or moldings to cover the expansion gap. Once done, inspect the flooring and clean it.
